On May 5th, a Kailua man was legally drunk when his pickup truck hit a tree on the Pali Highway, killing himself and a teenage girl and injuring another girl, the Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office said.
Mark Garcia had a blood-alcohol count of 0.123, well over the legal limit of 0.08, said Deputy Medical Examiner Mike Kobayashi.
Also killed in the accident was 13 year old Kamalani Kalama. Both were from Kailua.
At 12:25 am, Garcia lost control of the truck, which went off the highway and ended up hitting a tree on the west side of the Pali, a half mile north of Nuuanu Pali Drive on the Pali Highway. Speed was a factor in the crash, police said.
